I.     Proton

A.    DOES IT CONTAIN A TRANSITION METAL?

1.    Include the charge as a Roman Numeral in name

a.    Example:

Fe+3 is Iron (III); Co+2 is Cobalt (II)

 

b.    DO NOT INCLUDE ROMAN NUMERAL WITH Ag, Zn, or Cd (since they always have the same charge)

2.    JUST USE METAL'S NAME

a.    Na+ is called Sodium;

Ba2+ is called Barium;

Zn+2 is called Zinc

II.    Electron

A.    MONATOMIC (1 atom ion)

1.    USE "-IDE" as a SUFFIX in atom's name

a.    EXAMPLES: Cl- is called chloride;

O-2 is called oxide

B.    POLYATOMIC (MORE THAN 1 ATOM)

1.    USE REGULAR POLYATOMIC NAME

a.    (PO4)-3 is called phosphate;

(OH)- is called hydroxide
